Season 3, Episode 3: ASIAN F

Mercedes shows up late again to booty camp to find Santana has re-sworn her allegiance to glee club. Mercedes fails to dance using the excuse that she is sick and Will tells her she needs to try harder. Will talks to Emma about how he hasn't met her parents and she says that it's a big step that's she isn't ready to take. Will feels like she is slipping away from him. Mike's father, Mike Sr. brings him to see Figgins. He's upset because Mike got an "Asian F" in chemistry, an A-minus. He thinks Mike should quit Glee and focus on what he feels are more important things. Mike promises to do better and asks for a chemistry tutor. Mercedes' boyfriend Shane spots her and Rachel hugging and thinks it's a mistake she's being so nice to Rachel given they are competing for the lead role in the musical. He tells her she's better. This leads to Mercedes performing "Spotlight" which becomes her audition song for the role of Maria. The directors love it. Rachel seems stunned by how strong Mercedes was. Mike, who has been working on his singing with Tina so he can be in the musical says he can't audition because he needs to get his grade up. Tina tells him that he shouldn't hide the fact that he wants to be a performer. Meanwhile, Rachel helps Kurt campaign for senior class president. They think he has it in the bag until Britney performs "Run The World (Girls)" in front of the school, making her go up in the polls. Beiste and Emma tell Will it's too close to call between Rachel and Mercedes for the role of Maria. The directors tells the girls they will be singing "Out Here on My Own" as kind of a run-off for the part. Rachel tries to hug Mercedes for good luck but she isn't having it. In the school's dance studio, Mike goes through some steps while debating what to do with his life. He hears his father and Tina, then ultimately decides to audition for the role of Riff, the second male lead, with "Cool." Afterwards, he says this is what he loves to do. It can never be a waste of his time. Shelby tells a Beiste she's having trouble getting anybody to join her rival Glee club. Beiste tells Will he should take the bull by the horns with regards to Emma's parents. Kurt tells Blaine that he is OK with Blaine being Tony is that's what the directors decide. Mercedes yells at the rest of the Glee members during another dance practice. She starts to storm off. Will says if she does, she's out of the club. This transitions into a performance of "It's All Over." Mercedes finds herself alone on stage and no longer in glee club. Mike's mother, Julia comes to see him at school. Mike's been skipping his chemistry tutoring. She had to cover for him. Mike tells her e doesn't want to be a lawyer or doctor. Art is what makes him feel alive. She says she just wants him to be himself. She'll help him talk to his father once the musical has been cast. She always wanted to be a dancer. Mike gives her a few lessons. Rachel and Mercedes have their sing-off. Before they sing, Finn and Shane each give them pep talks. Both sing well, but Rachel seems convinced Mercedes was better. Rachel asks Beiste is she can enter the race for senior class president. Kurt confronts Rachel about her telling Beiste she wants to run against him for president. She says she's worried she won't have anything special for her senior year since Mercedes may get the lead. Kurt thinks she is choosing her transcript over her friends. The directors tell Rachel and Mercedes they have decided to double cast the role of Maria. They are adding another week of performances. Each will have the lead for six shows. Mercedes thinks she was better and says the part was only double cast to protect Rachel's feelings. She withdraws her name. Rachel tells Finn about the way she got Maria. He thinks this means she'll withdraw from student class president. She isn't so sure. He says he isn't sure who he'd vote for. That night, Emma comes home to find Will has invited her parents over. She panics and reveals that her parents are "ginger-supremacists." They all have dinner where Emma's parents talk only about how gingers are mistreated and going to be extinct. They then make fun of Emma's OCD. Will gets mad and yells at them for being rude and horrible to their daughter and people with a non-red hair color. After they leave, Will and Emma head to bed where Emma begins to pray that she gets better. Will joins her in praying even though he doesn't know what he is doing. As Emma cries, Will sings "Fix You" which leads to the glee club singing it. Artie puts up the cast list for the musical revealing that Blaine got Tony, Santana got Anita, Mike got Riff, Kurt got Officer Krupke and Rachel got Maria. As the song closes, Mercedes approaches Shelby to tell her that she wants to join her group.
